Poetry Folders
*Each child has an orange poetry folder. Each week, in class, we read and reread a "poem of the week". Each Friday a copy of that poem will go in this folder, after your child has illustrated it. Your child will bring the folder home to share with you. I hope that you will take the time to sit with your child and read the poems in the folder together.
*Do not expect your child to be able to read these poems on his/her own. He/she will memorize many, if not all of them, and will hopefully begin to recognize some letter and words
*Please remember to send this poetry folder and the poems back to school on Monday so we can insert the next week's poem.
*Educational research is clear that the best thing you can do to foster your child's success in school is to read to him/her. Other research clearly demonstrates the necessity for children to hear the rhyme and rhythm of our language in order to be successful readers. By reading these poems each week with your child, you are helping him/her in both areas!
*Have fun as you read the poems! Encourage your child to "read" along with you and don't be afraid to use different voices or sing the poetry. It is very important that this time is pleasurable--both for you and your child--so that your child sees reading as a valuable AND enjoyable activity.
*Thank you for taking the time to read these poems with your child. I hope the time together is wonderful and provides you with some great memories. You will also provide your child with important support as he/she learns to read.
Happy Reading!!
